NEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump claims his campaign scored $7 million in donations since his indictment was announced in the Stormy Daniels hush money case last Thursday.
"In only three days since news of the indictment, (Trump’s) campaign has raised a record $7M,” Trump spokesman Jason Miller wrote on Twitter.
The massive haul came as Trump’s MAGA loyalists and Republican leaders rally behind him ahead of his expected arraignment on Tuesday.
It’s not possible to confirm Miller’s claim because official, publicly available fundraising reports are only submitted on a quarterly basis.
The cash has been pouring in since Trump’s campaign started using the indictment in a string of fundraising pitches that denounce the case as a partisan witch hunt.
Right-wing media hosts and GOP lawmakers have also urged fans to open up their wallets for Trump to teach his critics a lesson.
Trump, who announced his comeback White House run last year, has been soaring in Republican presidential opinion polls since he announced that he expected to be indicted soon.
Trump now leads Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, his main potential rival, by a nearly 2-1 margin in some polls after being close to even a couple of months ago.
Nikki Haley, Trump’s ex-U.N. ambassador, and ex-Vice President Mike Pence trail badly in single digits in the polls.
Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson tossed his hat in the ring on Sunday by criticizing Trump. But he is little known nationally and is considered unlikely to win wide support anytime soon.
DeSantis, who has not yet entered the race, angered some diehard Trump supporters by denouncing the upcoming case while snidely noting that he would know “what goes into paying hush money to a porn star.”
Trump has also been hammering DeSantis relentlessly for his supposed support for cuts in Social Security and Medicare. The former president’s campaign recently launched a TV ad campaign saying Republican primary voters don’t really know DeSantis.
