- In Brazil 's congressional elections, hundreds of candidates are utilizing a long-standing tradition of adopting eccentric alter egos and famous aliases, such as helicopter pilot Plínio Vicentin Júnior campaigning as "Plínio Trump" and Cláudio Henrique dos Anjos running as "Henrique Barack Obama."
- Other candidate aliases range from rock icons and fictional terms to local quirks, including a carpenter running as "Mick Jagger," a martial artist running as "Samurai Taxi Driver," and a state assembly contender named "Tsunami Grandmother."
- Under Brazil's proportional representation electoral system, votes cast for these parody candidates accumulate on their political parties' slates, helping mainstream parties win additional seats and secure larger shares of public campaign funding even if the individual candidates do not win.
- The practice of novel political bids in Brazil traces back to 1959, when a zoo rhinoceros named Cacareco received 100,000 protest votes, and reached a major milestone in 2010 when circus clown Tiririca won a congressional seat with over 1.3 million votes and served four consecutive terms.
- Political analysts note that the rise of these unconventional contenders highlights the decay of traditional political leadership, while candidates like Plínio Trump explicitly state that adopting figures like Donald Trump provides a recognizable right-wing reference for voters.
