Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, confirmed that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev helped pay for their wedding celebrations in the Bahamas, after reports revealed that the Putin-linked businessman covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses.
Kremlev paid to rent one of two private islands used for the May festivities, where guests stayed and a reception was held, and covered other expenses including a fireworks display, according to records and interviews reported by ProPublica.
The payments came through IB Challenger, a Dubai entity affiliated with the International Boxing Association, which Kremlev heads.
"Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding," the couple said in a statement reported by The Guardian, calling it "an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend."
They said they married privately on May 22 with only family present and rejected suggestions that Kremlev's contributions carried a political motive. "Friendship doesn't require a political motive," they said. "Generosity doesn't automatically come with an agenda."
Kremlev, who attended the broader celebrations but not the 18-person ceremony, has longstanding ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin awarded him Russia's Order of Friendship in April, and Kremlev traveled to China around the time of the wedding as Putin was visiting the country. Ukraine has sanctioned Kremlev over his ties to Putin and Russian security services.
ProPublica reported that the roughly 50-person guest list included a sizable Russian contingent. Among them was Alexander Lagutin, a businessman who has held senior positions at a Russian defense contractor and a state-backed energy company.
A spokesperson for Trump Jr. said Kremlev is a personal friend, not a business associate, and that the two met through a mutual friend in the hunting world. Kremlev's office similarly described their relationship as personal and said politics had not been discussed.
The disclosure prompted Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, to call for answers about what Kremlev might have sought from the relationship:

Former FBI counterintelligence official Frank Montoya Jr. told ProPublica that accepting such financial support creates potential influence concerns. "If I'm paying for your wedding, at some point, you're going to owe me something," he said.
It remains unclear why Kremlev paid the expenses or whether he sought anything in return.
