Trump dealt fresh blow as his approval rating plummets ahead of US midterms

  • Donald Trump’s approval rating has plummeted to a record low of 33 per cent in a Financial Times poll conducted by Focaldata, presenting significant challenges for the Republican party ahead of November’s US midterm elections.
  • Widespread pessimism regarding the US economy and rising cost of living is driving the decline, with 57 per cent of registered voters stating they are financially worse off under the Trump presidency.
  • Surging energy prices have further fuelled voter dissatisfaction as diesel reached an unprecedented national average of $5.85 a gallon due to the ongoing conflict with Iran, which Trump has nevertheless dismissed as a minor conflict.
  • The president has also downplayed Iran’s leverage over the Hormuz Strait, asserting that alternative overland pipelines and shipping routes will render the crucial global oil hub largely unnecessary.
  • Compounding Republican anxieties ahead of the midterms, recent Gallup data reveals that 31 per cent of US adults now identify as Democrats compared to 25 per cent as Republicans, marking the largest Democratic lead in party identification in over a decade.
