Trump ‘asked China’s president’ if he wanted to buy US weapons

US ambassador to Beijing David Perdue claimed president Donald Trump offered to sell weapons to Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his state visit.
The US State Department and White House denied the claims, clarifying that US law prohibits arms sales to China and no such offer exists.
The Trump administration has held a $14bn arms package to Taiwan in abeyance, which Trump has described as a negotiating chip.
Chinese state media reported that Xi Jinping urged Trump to handle the Taiwan question with prudence and oppose Taiwan independence.
Taiwanese officials highlighted the necessity of US military support to help the island defend itself against increasing Chinese military pressure.
