Trump administration waives environmental laws to accelerate border project in Big Bend

The Trump administration is once again circumventing federal environmental protections to accelerate the construction of border barriers and associated infrastructure in West Texas’s Big Bend region. This latest effort targets an area encompassing the region’s renowned national and state parks.

A preliminary federal notice released Monday indicates the regulatory waiver will apply to over 100 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. This stretch extends from near the Closed Canyon trail in Big Bend Ranch State Park, through the entirety of Big Bend National Park, and into remote sections of southeastern Brewster County.
