Tropical Storm Norbert Forms Near Mexico: What the Pacific's Next Storm Could Mean

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - OCTOBER 7: Tropical Storm Josephine in the Gulf of Mexico as seen about 1200hrs EST 07 October in an enhanced infrared satellite image from the Spaceflight Meteorology Group, in Houston, Texas. The storm may be upgraded to a Hurricane and is expected to make landfall in northwest Florida the evening of 07 October. (Credit: Photo credit should read NW/AFP via Getty Images)

The Briefing

  • Norbert takes shape at 40 mph: The storm formed roughly 685 miles (1,102 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California Sur, and forecasters have not posted any coastal alerts for it.
  • Hurricane strength possible by Saturday: Forecasters expect gradual strengthening while Norbert sits over open Eastern Pacific water.
  • Lowell keeps fading, but it peaked much stronger than it looks now: The storm rocketed to Category 5 strength, with winds hitting 160 mph, off Hawaii earlier this month before weakening; it's now a 65 mph tropical storm drifting west over open water.
  • A near-record El Niño is driving the pattern: International forecasters expect this year's El Niño to become "very strong" before 2026 ends, among the most powerful on record, which is helping fuel an unusually busy Pacific season.
