Trophy-hunting Sky Blues bolster ALW squad

Sydney FC have signed New Zealand veteran Anna Green and up-and-coming American striker Madison Haley in their bid to reclaim the A-League Women championship.

The Sky Blues have won back-to-back premierships but lost the past two grand finals to Melbourne Victory, and haven't won the championship since 2018-19.

Haley, a former US youth international who starred for Stanford and was drafted to the Chicago Red Stars in 2021, adds further potency to Sydney's attack, led by Cortnee Vine and Princess Ibini.

Green, an 80-cap New Zealand international who made five appearances for Sydney in 2013, will bolster their defence.

Sydney also welcome back former Young Matilda Shay Evans, who was in their squad from 2018-2020 but most recently played at Adelaide.

"These three players really strengthen us in different areas," coach Ante Juric said in a statement.

"We've got real competition for places and a very high standard among the playing group so I've no doubt training will be intense and will improve everyone, when we get going tonight.

"This club has a fantastic history and reputation to uphold in the women's competition so it's important we take pre-season seriously and ensure we are firing come round one."

There is an extra incentive for New Zealand veteran Green: locking in her spot for next year's Women's World Cup tilt on home soil.

"This is a big year for everyone in Women's football, particularly in Aus and NZ, with places at the World Cup up for grabs," the 32-year-old said in a statement.

"I want to make sure I put myself in the frame for a spot in the final squad."

The Sky Blues kick off their season on Saturday November 20 away to Adelaide United.
