TRICHY: Trichy corporation has initiated preparatory work to table a revised budget for the ongoing financial year 2022-2023 by the first week of May. With self-sustainable revenue generation in mind, officials and elected representatives said the budget will lay thrust on improving independent income sources, plugging non-essential expenses and monetising the corporation’s properties.
The civic body officials were earlier denying the possibility of presenting a revised budget despite an elected council assuming office after a gap of six years. However, pressure has been mounting on councillors from city residents to present a new budget to find solutions to key demands. A meeting was recently chaired by mayor Mu Anbalagan, post which the officials confirmed that the civic body will table a revised budget within the first week of May.
While four standing committees were nominated and election of their chairpersons held last month, two important committees — town planning and taxation and finance — responsible for increasing the revenue of the local body were not formed. As the taxation and finance committee’s approval is mandatory to prepare the budget, the civic body has obtained the state election commission’s permission to nominate members to the two committees on April 28. The chairpersons of the two committees will be chosen through an indirect election at the main office on April 29. “We are identifying potential sources to augment revenue besides the regular sum generated through local body taxes and other conventional sources,” Trichy mayor Mu Anbalagan told TOI.
