TRICHY: Indicating the return of fresh Covid-19 infections in bulk, Trichy city has recorded three positive cases, all from the same family with international travel history.
The urban local body has recognised the multiple cases as a new Covid-19 cluster. The bulk cases resurfacing after a gap of three months have put Trichy corporation on alert mode to increase the RT-PCR testing and intensify the enforcement such as wearing facemasks and social distancing in people gathering places.
Trichy corporation said that a family of three who had returned from Canada to attend a wedding in Thanjavur district had stayed in a hotel near Trichy central bus stand. Although the family that reached by the first week of April 2022 had tested negative for Covid-19 during a screening on their arrival, they have attended the wedding in the second week of April in the Thanjavur district.
Only after returning to the city from the wedding venue, mild symptoms were developed by the trio. Subsequently, RT-PCR tests were conducted. All three of the family members who were vaccinated against Covid-19 were tested positive but their vaccination status helped in displaying very mild symptoms, officials said.
“The private hotel was disinfected, the infected persons were not city residents. A fresh wave of infection seems to be commencing,” a sanitary official added. The three persons who tested positive for the infection have relatives staying on Vayalur road locality falling under zone V(K Abishekapuram).
“So far, the cluster has not reported any new fresh cases. We will gradually increase the RT-PCR testing, right now, only 500 samples were being collected from the city per day,” Dr M Yazhini, the city health officer said.
