Tributes paid following sudden death of 'tirelessly dedicated' campaigner for Manchester United supporters

Tributes have been paid to a devoted campaigner who did 'so much' for Manchester United fans following his sudden death. Ian Stirling had been a match going Red since the 1970s and joined the Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) in 2004.

He acted as the organisation's Independent Supporter Liaison Officer, and was a central figure in campaigning for the introduction of safe standing at Old Trafford. He regularly appeared in the media as an expert on fan issues.

Earlier today, MUST said Ian was seriously ill in hospital. Tonight, it was confirmed that he had sadly died.

A statement read: "MUST is sorry to report that Ian Stirling, our great friend and brilliant ISLO, has died. We send our love, prayers and deepest condolences to Ian's wife Lynn and his daughter Lucy and all of Ian's friends and loved ones at this sad time.

"At the moment everyone at MUST is in total shock and broken hearted with this terrible news."

Journalist Andy Mitten, editor of the United We Stand fanzine, tweeted: "Devastating news about Ian Stirling. He did so much for Manchester United fans for so long.

"A stalwart, he was central to safe standing returning to Old Trafford. Trusted, respected, credible, approachable, J Stand and better liked than he ever knew. Rest in peace, Ian."

Well known United fan and songwriter Pete Boyle said: "Had the pleasure of Ian’s company down the years many times & he was a genuinely lovely guy & proper passionate United fan. Last saw him when Georgie was filming the recent ‘Munich Anniversary ‘ tribute video which they both appeared in. Thoughts his this family at this sad time."

TV presenter Ian Irving said: "Absolutely devastated to hear the news about Ian Stirling. A tirelessly dedicated representative for Manchester United fans.

"But most importantly, a lovely, genuine bloke. My thoughts are with his family and friends. You made a difference, Ian and you’ll be greatly missed mate."

Rainbow Devils, United's LGBTQ+ supporters group, said: "We are absolutely devastated to hear the incredibly sad news about Ian Stirling. A true gentleman who did so much for fan representation and all Manchester United supporters. Our thoughts are with Ian’s family and friends. RIP Ian."
