Matty Longstaff made it three goals in his last three games as he scored in Mansfield Town’s 3-2 defeat to Tranmere on Friday evening. The Newcastle United youngster finally seems to have found his feet this season after an unsuccessful spell with Aberdeen in the first half of the campaign.
There are still major doubts as to where his future lies but he is doing everything he can to impress with League Two Mansfield. The Stags came away from the North West empty handed after they conceded in the sixth of stoppage time at the end of the match.
Longstaff’s goal had initially levelled the scores in first-half added time and made it a trio of goals in his last three games. His, and his team mates’, form has helped Mansfield’s push for a League Two play-off place but they missed the opportunity to move into the top six on Friday.

They are currently only outside of the play-offs on goal difference and have a game in hand or two on a handful of the teams above so promotion is still, very much, in their own hands. Longstaff will know he has to play a key role if they are to break into the top six before he returns to Newcastle at the end of the season.
