A tornado has brought down a row of trees, closing part of the A470. The A470 between Builth Wells and Erwood was closed at 1.45pm on Wednesday afternoon (November 23) following the incident, and officials do not expect it to reopen before Thursday afternoon.
Locals reported seeing the tornado take down the row of trees on the road. Traffic from Builth Wells to Llyswen will be affected.
On Wednesday afternoon Powys County Council posted on its social media pages. They said: “The A470 is currently closed between Builth Wells and Erwood, after a mini tornado brought down several trees. The road is not expected to reopen before tomorrow afternoon.”
A picture shared by the council on its pages shows the scale of the impact. There was a similar incident at the A4066 in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, on Wednesday afternoon as strong winds and heavy rain swept across the region followed by hail and thunderstorms later in the day. Many households in Newport and Monmouthshire also reported power outages as a result of the adverse weather conditions on Wednesday night.
According to the Met Office, around 30 tornadoes occur in the UK annually. They are typically small and short lived, but can cause structural damage if they pass over built-up areas.
