Treasures from the doomed Titanic come to Melbourne

Despite sinking 111 years ago the Titanic continues to fascinate, with an exhibition featuring more than 200 artefacts from the doomed ocean liner coming to Melbourne.

TITANIC: The Artefact Exhibition will be on display at the Melbourne Museum from December 16 after a sell-out run in Paris.

The exhibit includes a section of the Titanic hull that visitors will be able to touch, as well as some of the vast collection of objects salvaged from the sea floor.

Museums Victoria director Lynley Crosswell said the tragedy of the ship sinking on its maiden voyage to New York in 1912 still echoes today.

"Tragedy, heroism, sacrifice, survival and loss, these are themes the Titanic evokes which continue to resonate today, with people of all ages across the globe," she said.

The exhibition will also feature meticulously recreated ship interiors including the grand staircase.

Victorian Tourism Minister Steve Dimopoulos said the exhibit will give people the chance to understand some of the personal stories from the doomed voyage.

"The tragedy of the Titanic is known around the world, but there are so many personal stories and historic details to uncover through this illuminating exhibition proudly brought to Melbourne Museum with support from the Government," he said.

TITANIC: The Artefact Exhibition runs until April 14.
