Trapped hoarder rescued from their cluttered Dublin home

Dublin Fire Brigade have rescued a hoarder who got trapped in a huge pile of clutter inside their house.

Firefighters were called to the scene and they had to cut down the door of a house full of boxes, items like sweeping brushes, spades, containers, bags and much more.

DFB are advising anyone who knows a hoarder to get them to see a GP as “hoarding is a disorder that needs treatment and managing”.

A spokesperson from DFB said: “Apart from an obvious fire and escape risk, hoarding is a health risk. Do you know someone who hoards? Speak to their GP for advice.”

According to the HSE, a hoarding disorder is where a person gathers an excessive number of items and stores them. This is usually in a chaotic manner and results in unmanageable amounts of clutter.

Hoarding can be a significant problem if:

  • the amount of clutter interferes with everyday living
  • it is causing distress or affecting the quality of life of the person or their family

A hoarding disorder can:

  • Take over your life, making it very difficult for them to get around their house.
  • Cause your work performance, personal hygiene and relationships to suffer.
  • Cause isolation and loneliness.
  • Pose a health risk to you and anyone who lives in or visits your home.
  • Lead to unhygienic conditions and encourage rodent or insect infestations.
