Transfer verdict on Jamaal Lascelles' Newcastle United future

61% of Newcastle United supporters have voted in favour of selling club captain Jamaal Lascelles. In a recent survey conducted by ChronicleLive, 12,217 said they would choose to sell the 28-year-old this summer.

Lascelles started just four of Newcastle’s final 16 league games last season but has vowed to fight for his place despite the arrival of Sven Botman from Lille. Eddie Howe has started his summer clear out at St James’ Park with the sales of Freddie Woodman and Dwight Gayle, while Ciaran Clark, Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick have been sent out on loan.

The results from out survey give an intriguing insight into who fans would like to leave the club this summer.

The clock is ticking on Matt Ritchie’s future on Tyneside. The 32-year-old, who previously worked under Howe at AFC Bournemouth for three seasons, has spent the last six years at Newcastle. But after featuring just 19 times in all competitions last term, 83.7% of voters believe the time is right for Ritchie to leave.

There is a similar lack of confidence in Mark Gillespie, Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, Javier Manquillo and Matty Longstaff. Gillespie hasn’t played a single minute in the Premier League since arriving from Carlisle United in 2020, while Darlow is unlikely to feature following the arrival of Nick Pope from Burnley.

Fernandez hasn’t played for the Magpies since the turn of the year and received just 24.4% of votes in favour of keeping him. Manquillo has also fallen drastically down the pecking order. He will be Newcastle’s third-choice right-back when he regains fitness with both Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth ahead of him. 10,352 out of 15,552 voters said they would choose to cash in on Manquillo this summer.

There was a lot of excitement when Matty Longstaff scored a stunning winner against Manchester United in October 2019. But the Newcastle academy graduate has failed to kick on since then and even spent part of last season on-loan at League Two outfit Mansfield Town. He heads into the new season aged 22 and confidence is clearly waning in the stands with 66.3% voting to sell him.

Eddie Howe’s tough transfer calls

There are a number of players that have fallen into the middle category with Jamal Lewis, Jacob Murphy and Chris Wood dividing opinion. Lewis joined Newcastle from Norwich in 2020 as an exciting youngster but has struggled to impress, largely due to injury, during his time in Tyneside.

Lewis was left out of Howe’s 25-man Premier League squad in February due to injury. He has become the forgotten man at Newcastle but 56.2% of supporters believe he should stay at St James’ Park this summer.

Murphy played more times (33) last season than he has in any of his previous league campaigns at Newcastle. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old has never really fully convinced during his spell at the club. He has had loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday respectively but 54.3% of voters would like to see him stay.

Wood has struggled since his January switch from Burnley. He has netted just twice in 17 league appearances for the Magpies and received a 4.5 rating from supporters in their 1-0 pre-season defeat against FSV Mainz this week. Newcastle have been actively searching for a forward throughout the summer transfer window and 46.8% would like to see Wood’s spell cut short.

Vote of confidence for Magpies quartet

There were big votes of confidence from fans for Krafth, Allan Saint-Maximim, Sean Longstaff and Miguel Almiron. Saint-Maximim came off on top in the survey with 81.5% voting to keep him, while 76.3% voted to retain Krafth and 70.6% want Sean Longstaff to stay. Almiron also ranked strongly with 68% voting to keep the Paraguayan international at St James’ Park.
