A 14-year-old schoolgirl was killed when a train hit the motorcycle on which she was the passenger at a railway crossing in Nakhon Ratchasima on Monday.

The accident happened at about 10.30am at the railway crossing in tambon Lat Bua Khao.

The motorcycle was driven by 13-year-old Pongpisut Panyawai. He told police he and his friend Prapassorn Iamsa-ard, 14, were on their way to Ban Mai Samrong School. Prapassorn was riding pillion.

As they aproached the railway crossing he saw the safety barrier was lowered. He claimed he could not stop because his accelerator pedal was stuck. So he went around the safety barrier and across the track. The train hit the rear of his bike.

He and Prapassorn were thrown off the bike. Prapassorn was killed while he escaped with minor injuries.
