Meijer retail stores across six states have had to pull trail mix from shelves after the treat was recalled due to it containing traces of undeclared allergens.
Stores in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky had to remove a single lot of Frederik’s by Meijer Vanilla Bourbon Trail Mix 9 oz. from their shelves after retailer, Ferris Coffee & Nut Co., recalled the products for undeclared wheat and soy.
Soy and wheat are two of the Food and Drug Administration’s nine “major allergens,” meaning it is a legal requirement for them to appear on food warning labels. The other seven major allergens are milk, eggs, peanuts, sesame, fish, shellfish and tree nuts.
Undeclared allergens can result in allergic reactions that could range from discomfort to a life-threatening conditions. Nobody has reported any harm from the recalled products as of publication.
The recall was announced in an FDA press release that stated, “The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the wheat and soy-containing chocolate-covered pretzel balls were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat or soy, instead of the listed bourbon-flavored caramels.
“Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the production and packaging processes at Ferris Coffee & Nut Co.”
Ferris Coffee & Nut Co. has been contacted for comment.
According to the FDA, production of the trail mix has been suspended until both Ferris Coffee and the FDA can be certain this situation has been corrected.
If customers are concerned that they have purchased the recalled trail mix, they should check to see if it matches the FDA’s description of the recalled trail mix, which is that the trail mix is in a 9 ounce, black bag marked with lot # 6069-1 on the back, and is marked to expire on December 10.
It is the fourth product in April to be recalled by the FDA due to undeclared allergens.
