Tourists issued warning as Venice officials confirm entry fee to popular city

Tourists have been issued with a warning as Venice officials have announced plans that they are to introduce an entry fee for holidaymakers.

The move comes after a successful trial last month and according to officials, Venice authorities have said the official date from which visitors will have to book is January 16 of next year.

The new tax will not affect those already staying in the city as this fee will be covered by their accommodation. However it will affect those looking to visit the city for a day trip.

The fee, as reported by Birmingham Live, is to help prevent overcrowding in the city which can become overbearing during peak months. Those visiting the surrounding islands such as Burano and Murano will also have to pay the fee.

According to Euronews, travellers planning on visiting the historic city will have to register their visit whilst visitors arriving by both public transport and private methods must pre-book.

Only one ticket and payment is required for those travelling to multiple islands, including Venice and although some day-trippers are exempt from paying the entry fee, they will still have to book. These include residents of the Veneto region, students, and those visiting family members in the city.

The cost of tickets will vary from €3 to €10 depending on the season however during peak seasons you can expect to pay a higher fee. This will occur when the number of visitors booking to arrive in the city goes over a certain threshold, which has not yet been announced.
