Tottenham's new senior transfer structure explained as Fabio Paratici makes sweeping changes

Fabio Paratici has been working on surrounding himself with a new team of people to shape Tottenham Hotspur into the club he wants it to be.

The 49-year-old managing director of football spent more than a decade at the top table with Juventus and those who know Paratici say his skills lie in his working of the transfer market - seen as one of the best in the world when it comes to the trading of players - as well as in his strength in dealing with boardroom figures and communicating with the hierarchy of clubs, including his own, and pushing through what he wants to happen to push on the team.

The Italian's method of dealing with the remainder of the football side of the club is to surround himself with talented individuals, who are all experts in dealing with different facets and then report into him, creating a successful working management structure beneath him.

Paratici and Spurs' former technical performance director Steve Hitchen had undertaken a thorough appraisal of the departments within the club and what needed to be changed, with increased budgets handed to Paratici by chairman Daniel Levy.

Following Hitchen's resignation in February and after holding a series of interviews with top candidates around the game, Paratici has decided upon the personnel who will this summer form his new senior management structure in newly-created roles to ensure Antonio Conte's side has the best support possible on and off the pitch.

Gretar Steinsson is set to join Spurs as performance director, along with Andy Scoulding as his assistant, with both highly-rated recruitment specialists taking on many of the tasks Hitchen had under his remit and more, across both the first team and academy.

Former Bolton defender Steinsson, 40, was the head of recruitment and development for three years at Everton, having been technical director of Fleetwood Town for four years before that. He was relieved of his duties at the struggling Toffees in December last year following a cull of senior management which saw director of football Marcel Brands removed after what was reported as a "power struggle" with then manager Rafa Benitez, and manager of scouting and operations Dan Purdy also moved on.

Highly-respected Scoulding, also 40, will join from Scottish side Rangers where he was head of scouting for four years, following previous positions the London-born specialist had with the FA, Salford City, Olympiacos and Valencia.

Focused on the link with the youth set-up and academy manager Dean Rastrick will be 48-year-old former Manchester City and Anderlecht coach Simon Davies, who has been tipped to take on the title of head of methodology, ensuring a closer synergy between the first team and academy levels.

Not to be confused with the Welsh former Spurs midfielder of the same name, Davies did also play once for Wales, having been a member of the famous FA Youth Cup-winning Manchester United side of 1992, which included David Beckham and Gary Neville.

Davies was Head of Academy Coaching at Manchester City before joining Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht, managing the team for a spell of games when the Premier League-winning defender focused on being a player.

Davies is set to work with Rastrick and Chris Powell, following Ryan Mason's switch during the season to working within Conte's first team coaching set-up. The 31-year-old former Spurs midfielder had been head of player development alongside Powell in the academy structure before his coaching move.

From his first days in the job, Paratici has sought to raise the standards demanded behind the scenes at Tottenham as well as those on the pitch and now he is beginning to form the team that he believes can help him achieve that.
