Tottenham news: Ryan Mason breaks silence as players reimburse fans after Newcastle debacle

Your morning Tottenham Hotspur digest on Wednesday, April 26.

Ryan Mason breaks silence on Tottenham appointment

Ryan Mason has spoken out for the first time since being appointed as Tottenham Hotspur interim manager for the remainder of the season. The decision to appoint Mason came after Cristian Stellini was sacked following the devastating 6-1 defeat against Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs conceded five goals inside the opening 21 minutes as their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League took a major blow. Stellini lasted just four games in charge before being relieved of his duties at the club, just a month after taking over from previous manager Antonio Conte.

After being appointed as interim boss for the remainder of the season, the 31-year-old has now spoken out publicly for the first time. Mason tweeted: "It's a privilege to manage this great football club.

"I'm ready for the challenge and know what it means to represent the club. I've never taken for granted the connection I have with our incredible fans and will work relentlessly with the players and staff to ensure that as a collective we fight for the badge at all times.

"Time to prepare and focus all of our energy into Thursday's game. COYS."

Tottenham players reimburse supporters who travelled to watch Newcastle debacle

The Tottenham Hotspur players have decided collectively to cover the ticket costs of the fans who travelled to watch their embarrassing collapse at Newcastle United.

The humiliating 6-1 defeat at St James' Park, which brought five goals in the first 21 minutes, resulted in Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy sacking interim boss Cristian Stellini the following day, after just four matches in charge, with Ryan Mason taking over.

Now the players have made the gesture to those 3,000 supporters who travelled up and down the country to be served up such a display. They released a statement through the club on Tuesday for the fans.

William Gallas makes Daniel Levy feelings clear

Former Tottenham defender William Gallas has backed Daniel Levy to stay at the club amid claims he should walk away.

The Spurs chairman has been at the club for more than two decades but in recent weeks there have been calls for him to quit as the Lilywhites struggle on the pitch. Acting head coach Cristian Stellini was sacked on Monday following the embarrassing 6-1 loss to Newcastle United at the weekend, with Levy labelling the lacklustre defeat as “wholly unacceptable”.

"It was devastating to see," Levy said in a statement published on Monday evening. "We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the Board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine."
