Tottenham news: Antonio Conte's Christian Eriksen message as Brighton response demanded

It has been a challenging week for Tottenham Hotspur.

Not only did they suffer a last-gasp loss at home to Brighton last weekend, on Wednesday they watched Arsenal - their local rivals and main competitors for a top-four finish - go to Chelsea and earn an unexpected victory.

It means the Gunners only trail Spurs on goal difference going into this weekend's fixtures and, if they were to get a positive result against Manchester United on Saturday, they would jump ahead of Spurs. Tottenham then travel to an in-form Brentford outfit in the day's late game.

Mirror Sport has the latest Spurs news ahead of what promises to be a pivotal day in the quest to acquire Champions League football next season!

Will Spurs end the weekend in fourth place? Let us know in the comments section below!

Conte share Eriksen delight

Ahead of Christian Eriksen's meeting with his former club, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has shared his delight at seeing the Danish playmaker back on the field again.

Eriksen has excelled since being signed by Brentford despite many wondering if his career would be over after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 last summer. Conte and Eriksen worked together at Inter Milan for a spell and the coach has paid tribute to his former player ahead of the huge game on Saturday.

"To see him for a game will be a pleasure for me," he said of Eriksen. "It’s incredible because not long ago happened what happened. To see him playing again makes me very happy because I know football is life. To have this opportunity is great for him and his family because now they come back to have a normal life."

Ten Hag's Tottenham interview concern

Manchester United confirmed the appointment of Erik ten Hag - a coach Tottenham are said to have considered in the past - as the club's new manager on Thursday.

The current Ajax boss has developed a stellar reputation for his work with the Dutch giants, as they've enjoyed successful runs in the Champions League and play an enterprising brand of football. Spurs are said to have interviewed Ten Hag last summer before they eventually opted to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo, with the decision-makers at the club apparently bemused by the Dutchman only wanting to bring only one coach with him to north London.

Ten Hag's grasp of the English language was also reported to be a concern for the key figures at Spurs.

Conte expects response

With so much on the line this weekend for Spurs, Conte has made it clear he expects a response from his players after last week's disappointment.

A top-four finish is still in Tottenham's hands despite the Brighton loss, although the Gunners can apply some pressure to their rivals if they were to secure victory over United on Saturday lunchtime. Speaking ahead of the game, Conte tried to provide some context to the Brighton setback, but also made it clear what he expects from his team.

"For sure our hope and our desire is in every game to play well and to score goals," he said. "You know very well that every game is not simple and every game is difficult. In every game you have to be 100 per cent. I think during a season it can happen this type of situation.

"Don't forget Brighton won the last game against Arsenal and yesterday Manchester City struggled before the first goal. I think a draw was more fair but we have to learn that there are games that if you can't win you can't lose. At the end of the season even one point might help you reach your target."
