Tottenham news: Antonio Conte given triple setback, Bentancur and Kulusevski trick repeated

Your morning Tottenham Hotspur digest on Tuesday, November 1st.

Triple blow

Antonio Conte was without three first team stars in the final training session ahead of facing Marseille in a decisive Champions League clash.

Spurs know that avoiding defeat in France will ensure their qualification for the knockout stages but they will be without three key first team players following the remarkable 3-2 victory over Bournemouth.

None of Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski or Richarlison featured on the south coast, with the latter two both experiencing longer-term injury setbacks. Spurs assistant manager Christian Stellini subsequently confirmed in his media conference ahead of the game that all three will indeed miss out.

Richarlison, though likely to be fit for the World Cup, hasn't played since the Everton match, Kulusevski has been out since the September international break and Romero was called into play against Sporting despite fatigue and fitness worries.

Repeat transfer trick

Conte may well have to turn to the transfer window in order to start trusting more players in his squad.

Yves Bissouma, Djed Spence, Clement Lenglet and Fraser Forster have failed to make much impact after their summer moves and with mounting injury concerns, first halves as poor as the one against Bournemouth may become more frequent if nothing is changed.

Tottenham got it right last winter in order to bring in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur, but a similar feat may be needed to help the Italian achieve his goals this season. One of the targets could be James Maddison and CBS reporter Ben Jacobs thinks that could very much materialise.

Speaking to GiveMeSport , he said: "Tottenham have had Maddison on their radar as well and, come next summer, they might be the kind of club, if they get back-to-back seasons of Champions League football, that's a big appeal to James Maddison."

Levy January deals

In order to strengthen Spurs for a fight on all fronts after Christmas and the winter World Cup, Daniel Levy may well turn to the transfer market.

According to CalcioMercato, Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi is one of the names near the top of the list after falling out of favour with his current club. His deal expires next summer.

Weston McKennie of Juventus is another player reportedly wanted by Spurs in a further push for more midfielders. The American could leave in January after struggling since his move from Germany.
