Tottenham manager breaks silence on big injury concern amid Women's Super League problem

Tottenham Hotspur Women's boss Rehanne Skinner has provided as much as she can in regards to Ellie Brazil's leg injury sustained during the Man City WSL loss whilst also bemoaning the defending on Khadija (Bunny) Shaw's two goals.

The Lilywhites, who came into this one with two wins on the board and only one defeat against Arsenal in the North London Derby, had some belief that they could perhaps cause an upset against Gareth Taylor's side, much like how Aston Villa did on match day one.

However, the improvement in Taylor's side since the opening weekend meant this was not possible as Bunny Shaw and Lionesses star Lauren Hemp stole the show with the three goals scored between the pair, a similar situation to what unfolded against Leicester at the Academy Stadium a week ago in Manchester.

Spurs had their moments but were largely disjointed throughout the 90 minutes as Man City dominated and controlled possession. Part of this may have been down to the difference in quality between the two sides but also events that happened very early on in the game.

After putting some pressure on City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck in the 6th minute, Brazil became the victim of her own work ethic as she came off the worst out of the pair in a collision which halted play for a significant time.

The former Brighton forward, who was making her first start in the WSL this season and who recently opened up about the unpredictability of this season's league, was seen post-match with a leg/knee brace accompanying the crutch she used to meander to the home fans at full-time.

Skinner admitted it was too early to assess the severity of the injury picked up by the 23-year-old. "We've been trying to get Ellie in a position where she recovered from an injury that she had before we signed her," she revealed post-match. "She has been in great shape really and yeah, obviously didn't last very long in the game. unfortunately.

"It was a 50-50 situation and she has just got in for that and sometimes it just happens. I spoke to her at halftime and she was a lot more comfortable at that point. We obviously need to get a scan to understand what we're dealing with to really be able to decide what we do going forward."

Into the game itself, and the contest will be remembered as "The Bunny Shaw Show". The Jamaican netted twice - one goal in either half - to continue her red-hot form which has seen her now score five goals in the first four. Only Chelsea have denied her from scoring.

Having been posed the question in her pre-match press conference about how she planned to deal with the threat of the 25-year-old, Skinner bemoaned some of the defending for both goals.

The Tottenham boss explained: "For the set-play, we have two players trying to do the same job which has resulted in them getting in each other's way a little bit and that resulted in giving her that space to score.

"In the second one, we have dealt with her when we are in close combat with her the whole way through the game but the second we are expansive, it's very difficult for the centre-backs to then be physical because they are nowhere near the ball based on how it has evolved.

"So, she is obviously a clinical goalscorer and she took her chances well but for the rest of the game, I don't think she created too many problems for us."
