Tottenham handed major Nicolo Zaniolo transfer blow amid Roma contract renewal talks

Tottenham have been dealt a major transfer blow in their pursuit of Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo.

Spurs have brought Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence through the doors at N17, as well as recently completing their seventh signing of the summer in Destiny Udogie.

Antonio Conte is keen to add more players to his squad as he continues to reshape his team after a strong start to the 2022/23 season. Zaniolo is one player that Spurs continue to be linked to, with the potential departure of Tanguy Ndombele to Napoli and Giovanni Lo Celso having already secured a loan return to Villarreal.

The Serie A outfit are thought to value the 23-year-old playmaker in the region of £42million and reports from Italy, via Daily Mail, are suggesting former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is appealing to the Roma board for them not to sell Zaniolo this summer amid Tottenham’s efforts.

football.london understands a deal for the Italy international isn't close at present, despite reports suggesting the Lilywhites have submitted a £46million bid in recent weeks. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Zaniolo is now close to staying with Jose Mourinho's side for the season after the player’s entourage scheduled talks with the Giallorossi about potentially renewing the midfielder’s contract.

The 23-year-old's current deal in the Italian capital runs out in 2024 but Roma are thought to want to keep Zaniolo at the club by tying him down with a contract renewal. The Italy international scored eight goals and provided a further nine assists in 42 appearances last term.

Conte is thought to be a big fan of the midfielder but may need to focus on different targets as the Spurs boss looks to add a playmaker to his squad. football.london understands the Lilywhites are keen to add one or two more signings to Conte's squad before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.
