They form in very unsettled weather conditions as part of severe thunderstorms.
Today the Met Office warned of "very strong gusty winds" and "possibly severe" gales hitting the UK.
There is currently an amber warning for very strong winds for a very large swathe of England, Wales and parts of Scotland. Follow our live flood coverage here .
