'Tories are shaming Britain with their response to the Ukraine refugee crisis'

Ukrainians running for their lives, bodies lying in the streets and the mass evacuation halted were just part of another grim day for a country pounded by Vladimir Putin’s merciless machine.

The invasion may not have gone anywhere near as well as the deluded leader thought but the toll is mounting, innocent civilians and defiant defenders killed by bullets and bombs.

However, it is the duty of our Government to do everything, short of starting World War Three, to assist the Ukrainians because this is a conflict in which a side must be picked.

Yet, disappointingly, we discover the Tories are doing much less than most European nations on refugees and sanctions despite the tough and compassionate talk.

Words from Boris Johnson, Priti Patel and the rest once again unmatched by actions.

Issuing only 50 visas and establishing bureaucratic barriers when 1.5 million refugees have already fled Ukraine is the Conservatives shaming Britain.

Buck system

Fast approaching her 96th birthday and June’s Platinum Jubilee weekend, the Queen leaving Buckingham Palace to live in Windsor Castle is a significant moment.

Yet the switch raises questions about the £369million publicly funded refurbishment of Buckingham Palace if the Queen will no longer regard it as her home.

With the country’s finances under severe strain, the move presents us with an ideal opportunity to ask whether significant savings could be achieved.

Tight dilemma

It’s a tussle many people never get to grips with – opening a stubborn jar.

Thankfully, experts revealed rubber gloves are better than hot water or tapping the lid on a work surface to help us twist again.
