Topshop founder Philip Green drove woman who made business such a success to quit

Topshop was once a great success and a staple on the high street. However, in 2020 the chain went into administration, with many people losing their jobs. A new BBC Two documentary, Trouble at Topshop, has taken a look at how the business was run and how it all came falling down.

Topshop was the brains of prolific businessman Philip Green, who also owned British Home Stores, Wallis and Dorothy Perkins as well as many other clothing brands. Many have said Green was difficult to work with and it was nearly impossible to predict his mood.

One of the reasons Topshop became such a success was credited to Jane Shepherdson, who was the brand director. When she took on brand direction, Topshop had an annual profit of £9 million and by 2005 it was making over £100 million annually.
