A leading employment law solicitor is advising workers of their rights when it comes to bosses offering money instead of permitting annual leave requests.
Richard Grogan, who owns a well-known personal injury and employment law firm in Dublin, has been providing advice to Irish employees in recent months through his popular TikTok account.
The account has amassed almost 784,000 likes and has over 126,000 followers since it arrived on the video-sharing platform last December.
Mr Grogan, who established his firm Richard Grogan & Associates Solicitors in 2009, has gained popularity for his free legal advice on Irish employment law matters.
In a new video posted on Monday, he outlined the rights of staff who are being told by their employers they can't take annual leave but will receive extra wages in lieu of holidays.
"I've been asked, can an employer say to you, 'We're very busy at the present time, we're short-staffed so we can't have you taking holidays, but we'll pay you instead', and is that legal?" he said.
"No it's not, you have to get your holidays. That's the law and that's a fact."
In a previous video, Mr Grogan outlined how Irish workers are entitled to 20 days off per year at a minimum.
He also explained how employers will be breaking the law if they don't allow two weeks off in a row.
"When it comes to employment law in Ireland, there's lots of it, and the great thing is that it's all over the place and most employers haven't got a clue," he said.
"For example, you have to get 20 days of holidays a year, minimum, but two weeks of them have to be at the same time.
"And if the employer doesn't make sure you get the two weeks at the same time, they've breached the law."
