Most Americans imagine retirement happening on their own terms after years of careful planning and financial preparation. The reality is often very different. Many seniors leave the workforce years earlier than expected because of health problems, layoffs, caregiving responsibilities, or financial pressures they never saw coming. According to the Society of Actuaries’ 2026 Retirement Risk Survey, 59% of retirees reported retiring earlier than they originally planned, while only 6% retired later than expected.
