NEW YORK — Fresh off of winning a Tony Award for the recently canceled “Paradise Square,” Joaquina Kalukango has landed a plum gig in one of this Broadway season’s hottest shows.
The acclaimed actress will weave her magic into the role of the Witch in the hit revival of Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical “Into the Woods.”
Kalukango will begin performances on Dec. 16 until the limited engagement’s extended run ends Jan. 8 at the St. James Theatre, producers said Thursday.
“It’s the greatest playground for an actor to get to interpret the lyrical genius that is Sondheim. How fortunate am I that I get to play for a moment in the woods?” Kalukango, who also starred in “Slave Play” and “The Color Purple,” said in a statement to People.
Last June, the 33-year-old Atlanta native won a Tony for lead actress in “Paradise Square,” which followed the racially charged 1863 New York City draft riots. The sweeping musical opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on April 3, and closed July 17 amid poor box office sales.
In the current Broadway revival of “Into the Woods,” “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” star Patina Miller alternated the role with Tony nominee Montego Glover.
