Tommy Fury vs Jake Paul fight negotiations '90% done' with announcement imminent

Jake Paul and Tommy Fury have been in negotiations to arrange a fight after their original December date was cancelled following Fury's withdrawal. The deal to rearrange the fight is now believed to be '90% done', with Paul's coach Danny Smith confirming the news in an interview.

Tommy last fought on the undercard of older brother Tyson's world heavyweight championship clash, beating Poland's Daniel Bocianski at Wembley. Both he and Paul hold unbeaten records in their boxing career while also enjoying successful careers outside of boxing in the media.

Paul's trainer Smith has provided a valuable update as to the status of the fight, explaining to fans when they might be able to expect an announcement. “I'd probably say that we're around 90% done but we're just waiting on their end. We're good on our end. Whatever particulars that need to be worked out there end that's what we're waiting on," he told Vegas Insider.

“I think so without question [ Tommy Fury is the right fight for Jake]. And I like it because Tommy is a very fast foot guy, very fast hands and he moves around and understands distance and range, he boxes fairly well. It's going to be really, really good. He's not a huge puncher, but decent, with the right hand he is pretty decent.

" I think that it's a really, really good step up for both guys to be honest with. The reason I'm picking Jake to beat Tommy is because Jake has more of a dog mentality, the bigger puncher, and he's willing to trade."

Fury perhaps has the stronger boxing pedigree due to his family's role in the sport, with brother Tyson and cousin Hughie both operating at the top of the heavyweight division right now. However, Paul, younger brother of fellow YouTuber Logan will be no pushover as explained by his coach.

“The media and a lot of fighters don't know how well he's progressing and they really don't know how serious he is. And they're going to be underestimating him when they get in there until they feel his presence, his strength, his power, his speed. We've noticed that with a lot of sparring partners because they get in there and they're like: 'wow, it's a life or death situation in there with him and he's better than we thought' the world is going to see that.

The most important thing that I'm working on is his defence, his understanding of the selection of punches that you can throw and that same selection of punches that can come back. So defence is a huge factor in surviving in boxing.”

“I know for sure that we're not going to be at cruiserweight. We're going to come to light heavy. 175. We've just been fighting at the 190-192 limit. He's just floating around that weight. But he will be a 175 pounder and he will crack the top ten [in the world].”

“He has to stay so locked into his training because he knows that he doesn't have the amateur background. So we're training all year round. We're working on things all year round. It's not like we meet like the typical former champion or current champion and work out for eight weeks and then we disperse. We keep working all year round.”
