Tom Hanks and Henry Winkler's 30 year 'feud' explained as actor insists they're 'cordial'

It's long been rumoured there has been a 30-year feud between actors Tom Hanks and Henry Winkler - though the latter recently dismissed speculation over any tension.

Hanks, 66, and Winkler, 76, had worked together on an episode of Happy Days in 1982 but it was on the set of Turner & Hooch (1989) that there's said to have been drama.

The comedy film - which was released in 1989 - starred Hanks as Detective Scott Turner, who inherits an unruly dog named Hooch following the murder of one of his friends.

It's been claimed Winkler was initially the director of the project, with him previously alleging he was fired by a studio executive less than two weeks into filming.

At the time The Independent reported Hanks was responsible for Winkler's departure.

And Winkler hinted at tension with Hanks during an interview with People back in 1993, telling the outlet: "Let's just say I got along better with Hooch than I did with Turner."

He further spoke about the project whilst on Watch What Happens Live in 2019, claiming he had been directing the film for 13 days when he was suddenly let go.

"I was called into [studio executive] Jeffrey Katzenberg's office and he said: 'Do you have everything with you? Go home.' I got along great, great with that dog," Winkler said.

He however denied a feud the following year, telling TMZ : "I don't have a feud with Tom Hanks." Winkler added: "What everybody says and what is true are two different things."

Winkler was asked for an update about his relationship with Tom last month, with him explaining that he bumped into his former co-star and wife Rita Wilson, 65, a few years ago.

He explained to radio host Andy Cohen, 54, on SiriusXM a few weeks ago: "I ran into Tom and Rita at an awards show before the pandemic. It was very warm. It's all very cordial."

Director and actor Ron Howard, 68 - who has worked with both Hanks and Winkler in his career - has himself suggested that there isn't any tension between the pair.

He told the Guardian in 2020: "[The drama on Turner & Hooch] was disappointing. I'm friends with them and both men felt compelled to come to talk to me about it.

"It was just one of those unfortunate things where they really had a working style that did not fit [but] it's been a lot of years. Two men with a lot of water under the bridge."

The Mirror approached representatives of Hanks and Winkler for comment.
