Tom Burgess casts doubt over Leeds Rhinos move after new contract comments

Tom Burgess' potential move to Super League appears unlikely for now after the prop spoke of his desire to sign a new deal with South Sydney Rabbitohs. The England prop, who enjoyed a fantastic World Cup, is off-contract at the end of the season and put clubs on alert last season when he openly discussed a potential return to the Northern Hemisphere.

Burgess went as far as to even namecheck Leeds Rhinos, the club he grew up supporting. Speaking to Rugby League Live, he said: "I'm 30 now but we'll see what happens. I'm English and proud to be English. I'd like to bring my family back at some point but we'll see what happens. My immediate future is the World Cup then I'd like to re-sign with Souths for a few extra years and then go from there.

"Probably just being back here makes you miss it and miss the people. It does grate being back in the country a little bit, for sure. If it was serious and I was considering it I'd have to speak to my manager and see what's out there.

"You can't say where you're going to go because you don't know if they could have you and there are loads of things involved. Leeds, I grew up supporting them so it would be pretty cool to play for them but also, I speak a bit of French too so I might have to polish off my French, maybe in Catalans."

However, it would appear that, for now at least, his focus is on earning a new deal with the Bunnies, where he has played for the past decade and won the NRL.

“I would love to stay with Souths,” Burgess told Fox Sports. “I have been here for 10 years now. It’s my last year on contract, but I’m pretty confident we can get something organised and get a new deal sorted, whether it is a year or two I am pretty keen to stay.”

Burgess has made over 210 NRL appearances since joining the club from Bradford Bulls ahead of the 2013 season.
