The city of Lexington is putting out the call for people receive training to help prepare for any number of disasters. Lexington Emergency Management is looking for volunteers to take part in Community Emergency Response Team or CERT training.
Shelley Bendall is the preparedness coordinator for the division of emergency management. She said this type of training helps out in the early stages of a disaster.
“It teaches people what they can do in the immediate aftermath of an emergency to help themselves, their neighbors, their environment until the professional first responders get there.”
Bendall said these trained individuals would be able help the first responders.
“If we were to experience a massive emergency or a natural disaster we can be guaranteed our local first responders will be overwhelmed with calls for assistance. So what our CERT training does is try to provide people with the tools and the knowledge they need to bridge that gap.”
The CERT training consists of classes that meet once a week over the course of nine weeks. Applicants must live in Fayette County and be at least 18 years old to participate. Applications will be taken until February 28th.
