Tim Curry, the actor whose performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" became one of the most recognizable costumes in film history, died August 25 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 80. His longtime manager, Marcia Hurwitz, confirmed the death to Variety. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health later listed coronary artery disease as the primary cause, with a history of stroke and kidney cancer noted as contributing conditions.
Curry originated the role of Frank-N-Furter on stage in London before reprising it in the 1975 film adaptation, and it's the image from that film, the black corset, fishnet stockings, platform heels and dramatic makeup, that has outlived nearly every other reference point in his six-decade career. The look was designed to be provocative for its era: a self-described "sweet transvestite" character dressed in overtly feminine lingerie-as-outerwear at a time when mainstream film rarely presented gender-fluid style without ridicule.
