Adults with thyroid eye disease now have a treatment they can inject at home. Roche announced Oct. 16 that the FDA approved Enspryng (satralizumab) for adults with the condition, making it the first under-the-skin option that a patient or trained caregiver can give outside a clinic, according to the company's announcement.
Thyroid eye disease, also called Graves' ophthalmopathy, is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the muscles and tissues around the eyes. It can cause bulging eyes, double vision, swelling, light sensitivity, and pain, and it affects more than a third of people with Graves' disease, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Roche estimates it affects about 155 of every 100,000 people.
