'Thundery downpours' and 'spot flooding' predicted in Met Eireann weekend forecast

Last week’s Bank Holiday weekend was a washout and while temperatures have slowly been getting higher as we move into May, rain has been almost consistent recently, bar a few breaks in the showers.

Unfortunately, Met Eireann’s forecast for this weekend doesn’t bring good news. Although the weather will be warm, especially in sunny spells, reaching up to 19C at some points, most days will be unsettled with rain or showers.

The early forecast for next week does not indicate a change either, with Monday and Tuesday both bringing patchy rain or isolated showers. Here is Met Eireann’s forecast for the coming days:

Friday

According to the national forecaster, it is a dull Friday morning with further rain over the northern half of the country.

However, the rain will gradually clear, with sunny spells and showers following from the south, some heavy and possibly thundery, with spot flooding possible. Highs of 14C to 18C with light to moderate southerly breezes.

Residual showers will continue overnight with some mist and fog setting in too. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 11C.

Saturday

Saturday will see a mix of cloud and sunny spells with widespread, slow-moving showers, heaviest into the afternoon and evening with possible thundery downpours.

The highest temperatures will generally range from 15C to 18C, in light to moderate southerly winds.

It will become drier early in the night under broken clouds with lowest temperatures of 6C to 9C degrees, with light southerly breezes.

Sunday

Sunny spells and scattered light showers during the morning and early afternoon on Sunday, followed later by cloudier skies as rain and drizzle gradually extend countrywide, last to arrive to the east.

The highest temperatures will range from 14C to 19C, warmest in the east, in moderate south to southwest winds.

Heavy rain will follow overnight, clearing into the Irish Sea before morning. Low clouds and mist too. Very mild with lowest temperatures of 10C to 13C, in moderate south to southwest winds.

Monday

A day of sunny spells and scattered passing showers with a few heavy ones possible. Highest temperatures of 14C to 18C, in mostly moderate westerly winds.

Becoming mostly dry overnight with clear spells to start. Cloud will thicken before dawn from the west with patchy rain or drizzle developing. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 10C with light to moderate southwesterly breezes.

Tuesday

Outbreaks of rain in the west on Tuesday will spread eastwards, with sunny spells and isolated showers following. Highest temperatures of 12C to 16C, with light southwesterly winds freshening and becoming westerly behind the rain.
