A 2-year-old girl had surgery to remove her tonsils and oversized adenoids to stop her snoring and mouth breathing. She went home the next day, and at her two-week checkup, her family said she was recovering well. One week later, she was in the emergency department with a high fever and a stiff neck.
Imaging revealed an infection in the space behind her throat, along with pockets of air that had tracked deep into the tissues of her neck. Doctors in eastern Saudi Arabia reported the case Sept. 9 in the Journal of Surgical Case Reports. Compared with previous reports, they wrote, "our case had the most delayed onset."
