Manchester United’s recurring issue in recent years has been that when it looks like they might have turned a corner, they instead end up going around in circles from one crisis to another.
Their fine win over Liverpool at the start of the week was certainly a release from their recent struggles and a moment to savour after two awful defeats, but there is always a sense of imminent doom whenever a glimmer of hope arrives.
In a weird way, the trip to face Southampton at lunchtime is perhaps the tougher test, given it is an early kick-off against mid-table opposition, a game much harder to psych yourself up for than Liverpool under the lights.
