The deceased were identified as Muthu Saravanan and Sathish from Puzhal. Both had been involved in murders and attempt to murders in the city and suburban areas.

According to police sources, Muthu Saravanan, 27, and Sathish, 24, were the main suspects in the murder of an AIADMK functionary Parthiban at Redhills on August 17. The duo was absconding since then.

Upon information that they were hiding in a house in Marambedu Kandigai in Sholavaram Police station limits, a special team of police personnel reached the spot in the early hours of Thursday. When the special team approached to nab the duo, the latter reportedly opened fire at the police. In retaliation and self-defence, the personnel in the special team opened fire at the duo, police said.

The two men who were critically injured were rushed to a Government Hospital where the doctors declared them dead on arrival, added the police.
