Three dead as gunman fires randomly at passing cars after argument with dad

Three people were killed and two injured after armed police intervened in a shootout sparked by an argument between a man and his father in central Spain, police said.

The gunman, his neighbour and a policeman were shot dead at a house on a road between the villages of Argamasilla de Calatrava and Villamayor de Calatrava near Ciudad Real, about 143 miles south of Madrid.

The alarm was raised around 10.30am on Wednesday morning when the neighbour tried to intervene with the argument, prompting the gunman to begin shooting.

A 50-year-old left home with a rifle after a blazing row with his dad, 81, and started to shoot at passing drivers indiscriminately.

A special operations team from Ciudad Real were dispatched and surrounded the country house.

Another policeman was shot in the foot while a third officer suffered unspecified gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital.

The father escaped with some bruising, police said.

Villamayor de Calatrava mayor Juan Antonio Callejas said the road had been closed before the incident was resolved because someone “was shooting at all the cars” in an area he described as being full of holiday homes.

The incident in Spain’s Ciudad Real follows the shooting in Mijas, near Malaga, over the weekend.

As a result, a 21-year-old man has been left "paralysed" and in "critical condition" after being "shot four times by a masked gunman."

The young Spanish man, of Moroccan origin, is believed to have left a restaurant on Saturday when, at around 10.25pm, a “man dressed in black with only his eyes visible pointed a gun”, witnesses told local media.

The alleged gunman pulled the trigger and hit the victim four times, with two further bullets hitting nearby cars before he “fled the scene on a motorbike”.

Christo from Meson Dona Lola told Euro Weekly News: “I heard five shots while I was in the kitchen. Two men drove away on a motorbike before the police arrived 10 minutes after. It was obviously drugs-related”.

The victim has since been identified by Olive Press News as someone with an alleged history of drug trafficking.

According to reports no arrests have been made yet.
