Forty-eight children and teenagers in eastern Ireland developed drug-resistant staph skin infections after an outdoor gathering that featured three bouncy castles. Public health doctors now say close-contact play on the inflatables was the most plausible explanation, a route of spread they say had not been described before in the scientific literature.
The investigation, published Sept. 10 in the infectious disease journal Eurosurveillance, details an autumn 2025 outbreak of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. RTÉ and The Irish Times described it as the largest recorded outbreak of the superbug in Ireland.
Of the 48 cases, 47 had attended the event. The remaining child had close, sustained contact with an attendee who had symptoms.
A Party, Three Castles and a Hospitalized 12-Year-Old
The first sign came when a 12-year-old boy was hospitalized with MRSA folliculitis, an infection of the hair follicles. He had attended a social gathering nine days earlier. When a cluster of 25 more children from the same event sought care for unusual skin infections, an outbreak control team was urgently convened.
The gathering took place on a green area in a suburb within the Health Service Executive's Dublin and Midlands region. Parents recalled a warm, humid and showery day. Many children were noticeably wet, and play on the crowded castles was rough. Nineteen children estimated that they had spent at least four hours on the inflatables.
Patients ranged from 5 to 16 years old, with an average age of 12, and almost three-quarters were boys. The Irish Times reported 22 confirmed and 26 possible cases. Infections most often appeared as spots, redness and blisters, usually on the legs and especially the thighs. Twelve children also reported fever, nausea or vomiting. Most developed symptoms about two days after the party, though one did not become ill until 17 days later.
A Rare, Toxin-Producing Strain
All confirmed cases carried an identical strain, t016-ST22-MRSA-IV, which produces Panton-Valentine leucocidin, or PVL. The authors note that the strain has been described as hypervirulent but is rare in Ireland, and that the bacteria showed a distinctive pattern of antibiotic resistance.
According to CIDRAP, whole-genome sequencing of isolates from 22 patients confirmed the match. PVL is a toxin that can make staph infections more severe, and PVL-positive versions of this strain have been tied to outbreaks in India, China and Japan.
First author Domhnall McGlacken-Byrne, of the Health Service Executive's Department of Public Health in Dublin and Midlands, said this strain had not previously been linked to an outbreak in a health care or community setting in Ireland, according to RTÉ. He added that the outbreak was notable for a high attack rate and a relatively short incubation period.
Why Investigators Pointed to the Castles
McGlacken-Byrne called it "an unusual and complex community outbreak," with bouncy castle play "a novel mechanism for an outbreak of this size." He said no other exposure appeared as plausible as the close-contact play, although investigators could not determine the exact source or how transmission occurred. It was likely, he said, that one or more children had a symptomatic infection that spread to others.
Most infections were managed outside the hospital. According to the report, 33 children were treated by their general practitioner, while 15 attended a hospital emergency department or day ward. Four were hospitalized, and no one died.
Patients received antibiotics, antiseptic body wash and nasal ointment, and were advised to stay away from schools and child care until their acute symptoms resolved. Household contacts were decolonized, and a local primary school received infection prevention advice. The company that supplied the inflatables was told not to reuse them until they had been adequately cleaned and disinfected. The outbreak was declared over 40 days after the event, once two maximum incubation periods had passed without a new case.
What Families Can Take From It
No U.S. cases have been linked to this outbreak, and the report does not show that bouncy houses are inherently risky. Large community MRSA outbreaks have mostly been tied to sports, prisons and child care settings. This one shows how the same ingredients, skin-to-skin contact and crowding, can come together at a party.

The Irish authors urged public health teams to keep MRSA in mind wherever play or sport involves prolonged, close physical contact. They also recommended that suppliers of inflatable play equipment be made aware of the risk.
For families, sensible steps include covering scrapes before play, washing up afterward and watching in the following days for bumps that are painful, red, swollen, warm or filled with pus. Children with those signs, especially alongside fever, should be seen by a clinician, and parents should mention any recent crowded play events.
