9 tellings-off everyone with a Welsh mam got growing up

Many people are able to look back on their childhoods with fond memories and, sometimes, that will include the often exaggerated threats and warnings given to us by our mams.

While being a parent is tough no matter what era you come from, and with the cost of living crisis forever looming over us, we look back to when all we had to worry about were the words of wisdom that came from our parents.

Though some of these sayings would not be considered politically correct these days, we still heard them regularly back in the day.

Growing up is all about trying new things and, while we loved our mams, we didn't listen sometimes to their warnings and hopefully we would learn a lesson from whatever misdemeanour/accident that took place.

Most of the threats or warnings were to get us to behave or to stop us from driving them mad. A lot of the time, they didn't even have to follow through on the threat - the words and their conviction and THAT look were enough to keep us in line.

Below are only a small amount of phrases that no doubt many of you will be familiar with, especially if you grew up with a Welsh mam.

1. Carry on like that and I'll give your something to be sorry about!

This was a warning that if you continue with whatever you're doing - you'll be sorry.

2. If you fall and break yer legs, don't come runnin' to me

How we were supposed to be able to run on broken legs remains a mystery. But the ball was in our corner and if anything happened it was our own fault.

3. Don't sit too close to the telly or you'll get square eyes

Of course, this was back when kids TV was something of an event and we as children couldn't get enough of it. Although what they would say of today's reliance on various screens and tablets remains to be seen.

4. You’ll catch your death

Of course, this was their way of making sure you were warm enough - but all we wanted to do is get out there rain or shine. Sometimes even snow, wouldn't be enough to stop us.

5. If the wind changes you'll be left like that

This was said when you were caught making faces and/or screwing your face up. Funny enough no matter how many times I tried - it never did stick... or did it?

6. Any more of this and there'll be less of it

In other words, stop doing what you're doing right now or they'll take it away and there be nothing left.

7. Stop faffin' about

When you were trying your best to put something off, or just messing around, this was the call to stop dawdling and get on with it.

8. Dirty those clothes and you know what will happen

If you were dressed in your Sunday best for a family visit and were lucky enough to go out to play - then you had better not get your clothes dirty and embarrass your mam.

9. I'll give yew a warm ear!

And if all of the above failed then you would get this one as they weren't afraid to give us a clip 'round the ear, which would leave it red raw and warm.
