While users can open the app and read previous chats, new messages are not being delivered and users are instead seeing the message "connecting" at the top of the app. Both personal and group chats are affected by the outage.

Many people have taken to social media to complain about the outage on Whatsapp and to check if others were experiencing the same proplem.

One person wrote on Twitter: "When your WhatsApp is playing up but you come to Twitter and see that everyone else is having the same problem #WhatsAppDown"

WhatsApp has more than two billion monthly users worldwide and millions are thought to be affected by the outage.

The messaging app is currently down in dozens of other countries including the UK, France, India, Germany, Italy, and parts of the the United States and Canada.

Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, as well as Facebook and Instagram, released a statement saying: "We're aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages, and we're working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible."

There does not appear to be any issues with Facebook or Instagram this morning, both which are owned by Meta.
