Thousands could be made homeless in eviction 'tsunami' warning

The number of eviction notices issued last year could reach 10,000 – as the opposition warns there will be a “tsunami” of them this month.

It could mean around 27,000 people being thrown on to the streets. But Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and several ministers were defiant yesterday on not reintroducing the ban that will expire on March 31.

New figures released by the Residential Tenancies Board yesterday showed 4,741 Notices of Termination were issued between July and September of last year. This compares with 1,132 from January to March and 1,666 from April to June 2022.

Some 2,845 landlords told their tenants that they intended to sell the property. In 794 cases, the landlord or their family wanted to move back in. Some 738 notices were issued due to tenants breaching obligations.

Nearly 40% of the notices to quit were given to households in Dublin. Some 500 were issued in Cork, while there were 286 in Galway. According to CSO figures, each household has an average of 2.75 occupants – so 27,000 could be affected.

The Government banned evictions between October 30 and March 31. If a person had received a notice to quit before the ban was introduced and their eviction date fell within this period, they were allowed to stay. Sinn Fein’s housing spokesperson Eoin O Broin said the “scale of homelessness risk from April 1 is much worse than expected”.

The RTB is set to release figures for the number of notices of termination issued in the fourth quarter of last year in a week’s time. He added: “What we have in the first three quarters of the year is 7,539 eviction notices.

“We could be looking at more than 10,000 notices of eviction before the end of the year.

“If the Government knew these figures, that makes them callous because that means they took the decision, knowing the scale of the crisis that was coming down the line.”

The Social Democrats housing spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan
said: “From the figures we have already, there is going to be [a tsunami of evictions].

“It is very worrying.”
