Thomas Tuchel urges Chelsea ticket solution for Real Madrid showdown in Champions League

Thomas Tuchel is hoping Chelsea can find a solution to allow their fans to attend the Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid.

The two sides, who met in the semi-finals during Chelsea's march to the title last season, were paired together at this morning’s draw.

Chelsea’s first leg against Carlo Ancelotti's league leaders will be in the Spanish capital on either April 5 or 6, but they face having no fans for either leg after their owner, Roman Abramovich, was sanctioned by the UK Government and the European Union.

The Blues, who host Madrid on April 12 or 13, are unable to sell tickets for the tie due to restrictions in place, but if a new owner came in before then, that would change.

"It would be a disadvantage [to play without fans]," said Tuchel. "But in general this game is for the spectators and hopefully we find a solution.

"Everybody at board level will fight for a chance, the game is a different game when the crowd is in the stadium so hopefully we can make it happen."

On the draw, the German said: "A tough one. The challenge cannot be much higher than playing in the Bernabeu with spectators. It is a big challenge but big excitement around this fixture. We know what is coming and we are excited."

The Blues also learned that they will face either Atletico Madrid or Manchester City if they make it to the semi-finals.

On the other side of the draw, Benfica will take on Liverpool and Bayern Munich will face Villarreal.

Chelsea also have a headache over getting to Madrid as they are capped at spending £20,000 on travel to away games.

The Blues did not have an issue for their trip to Lille this week as they had already paid for the travel arrangements before sanctions were placed on Abramovich.

Chelsea had their travel budget increased by the Government for this weekend's FA Cup trip to Middlesbrough, meaning they will fly to the game today, and that could also be the case for the game in Madrid.

"Everybody worked hard to make it happen and it has gone through," said Tuchel. "We can travel by plane which is very good because we had just two days to rest for the last match. It is important to minimise the travel time to reduce the risk of injury. Everything is organised as usual."

Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Andreas Christensen all face late fitness tests today before Chelsea travel to Middlesbrough for tomorrow's FA Cup quarter-final clash.
