Thomas Tuchel's January Kenedy comments suggest deadline day transfer to Leeds United unlikely

Leeds United have reportedly seen an approach for Chelsea winger Kenedy turned down, according to the Telegraph's Mike McGrath.

The Whites have been scouring the market for potential wide options in the event that Crysencio Summerville departs before today’s deadline, with Moses Simon and Takumi Minamino also linked.

However, just like Minamino, it appears as though Leeds have had no success in their pursuit of Kenedy, with Chelsea looking likely to keep him.

The 25-year-old was due to spend the season on loan at Brazilian side Flamengo, however the Blues recalled him earlier this month.

Kenedy may have to provide cover to Marcos Alonso at left wing back for the rest of the season due to Ben Chilwell’s long-term injury and their lack of success in attempting to recall Emerson from Lyon.

Speaking on Kenedy’s future earlier this month, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hinted that he would need to keep him due to their injury troubles, which could be why a deal with Leeds has made no progress.

Via Football London, he said: “Kenedy is back and I’m very happy about it. This is huge, huge opportunity for him to make his mark at this club and in this team. We will try now from today on to push and support him as good as we can.

“We cannot say Kenedy is the solution. He can be the solution, but the situation has not changed. We have long-term injuries at wing-back and we suffered a lot.

"We suffered in midfield from Covid and injuries and now our midfielders are more or less coming back, we suffer a lot with our central defenders.

"Nothing has changed but it needs to make sense, to be possible, make sense on a high level and also in the quality, personality. We have a look into the market, nothing has changed. We have all options, also the option to say no.”
