Thomas Tuchel's £34million Chelsea transfer mistake summed up by Robert Lewandowski comparison

Chelsea's transfer mistake in allowing striker Tammy Abraham to leave in the summer is being highlighted once again, with the England international matching Bundesliga great Robert Lewandowski over the last three months.

Abraham, 24, has hit the ground running since making his £34million switch to Roma and his latest double against Empoli has proved that point whilst his successor Romelu Lukaku was left frustrated again in not finding the net at the weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.

"Very good, very good performance, He was very reliable, put in a huge effort. It was a good match," Tuchel said in his post-match interview on Lukaku.

"It's a bit story for our team - we work hard off the ball, sometimes not in full confidence, in calm state of mind when it comes to the opponents box. But the effort is something we define, benchmark and standard."

"He gave everything in terms of work rate. This can happen you arrive a bit tired in front of goal."

The Belgian's explosive Sky Italia interview coupled with his lack of cohesion in this current Chelsea set-up has many fans regretting the expensive £97.5million decision Marina Granovskaia and co made at the expense of the Englishmen, despite Lukaku's improved performance against the Lilywhites.

However, Jose Mourinho's new talismanic figure in the Italian capital keeps on hitting new heights and his latest set of goals have drawn top comparisons to world-class talent.

Since, the start of November, only Lewandowski has scored more goals than the 12 Abraham has now netted in his last 12 outings in the Italian league.

A massive achievement for a player Frank Lampard and Jody Morris trusted during their tenure together in the coaching set-up at Chelsea, and the latter of the pair isn't surprised by what the 24-year-old is achieving under Mourinho.

Morris tweeted on his Twitter account @morriskid: "While I’m talking about top players…Hows Tammy Abraham doing??! That kid (not a kid anymore) will score goals for whoever he plays for!!

"Must be the highest scoring Englishman in the top 5 leagues??"

Just like Lukaku did this summer, it's no doubt that if the new Roma fan favourite is able to keep up his impressive goal contribution rate on the continent, then a homecoming in the future to west London could be possible for Abraham.

Alongside selling the aforementioned number 9 for a mere £34million, the hierarchy in SW6 were smart enough to include a buy back option that becomes active in June 2023, believed to be worth £67million.

Despite the harsh treatment at the end of his first spell with the European champions, the player with an impressive xG of 12.1 (3rd highest in Serie A) this season as per FBRef.com, still holds a fondness for his ex-club.

This was shown by his recent message to Callum Hudson-Odoi on social media following the London derby, whereby he responded to a tweet stating: "London is Blue" with: "It always was."
