This is what happens when a veterinary nutritionist creates dog food

— Nom Nom

As a pet parent, it can be disheartening to look at the ingredient list of your dog’s food: It’s often filled with hard-to-pronounce mystery ingredients and cheap fillers. So, if you’ve ever been curious about fresh pet food, Nom Nom is currently offering 50% off your first delivery so you can try it out. The brand’s board-certified veterinary nutritionists develop fresh dog meals based on standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) to ensure they’re nutritionally balanced. Plus, they are delivered directly to your door (via free shipping) in convenient, pre-portioned servings.

How are the meals different from kibble?

When you sign up for a Nom Nom subscription, you’re prompted to set up a profile and choose various meals for your pet to enjoy. These include recipes including beef-, chicken-, pork-, and turkey-based meals that include vegetables like carrots, peas, spinach, or sweet potatoes. The recipes also contain a variety of vitamins — including vitamin D, vitamin E, B vitamins, and more — to round out your pet’s diet. They don’t contain artificial preservatives, fillers, or by-products.

All of the Nom Nom meals are developed by board-certified veterinary nutritionists and a PhD-led veterinary science team. Plus, they meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO, of complete and balanced meals.

If you have a picky eater, you’ll be glad to hear you can get multiple meal types in the same order or automatically rotate through them with each order for variety.

What are the benefits of fresh food?

According to a study on fresh pet food, the microbiomes of healthy dogs on a fresh food diet differ from those on a processed kibble diet. The same study also determined that the highly digestible nature of the food leads to a welcome benefit for pet parents: up to 66% smaller poops.

According to Nom Nom, the nature of the food leads to a boost in energy and the blend of oils in the food leads to shinier coats and healthier skin. The brand also claims the vitamins in the meals improve eye health, as well as boost the immune system.

How are the portion sizes determined?

One of the biggest perks about Nom Nom is that the meals come in portions designed for your specific pet and your health-related goals for them. To determine the ideal portion amounts, your dog’s current body composition and target weight are factored in, as well as their activity level and age.

How do shipments work?

The meals are prepared fresh in Nom Nom facilities in Nashville and San Francisco. Every four weeks, your pet’s meals will be delivered to your door. They come packed on dry ice (which is less wasteful and more eco-friendly than plastic ice packs) and from there, the company recommends storing them in the freezer. Pull out an individually packaged meal and let it defrost 24 to 48 hours before feeding time. Kept in a sealed container, defrosted food will last in the fridge for up to five days.

It’s easy to reschedule or cancel your Nom Nom subscription if you’re not satisfied, so there’s essentially no risk in giving it a shot — except for smaller poops, of course.
